59: Focus on What Matters in Life

In today’s solo episode, I share my perspective on what truly matters when looking back on my life. Social media has greatly intensified comparison and makes it easy to get caught up in what you might miss out on that seems important  and can make you lose sight of what matters most in life.

I’ve had some amazing experiences as well as difficulties throughout life. Looking back, the moments I treasure the most aren’t when I met astronauts and heads of state or flew a plane.

To truly have a meaning-filled life, shift your focus from attaining material things and unique experiences to allowing the experiences you find yourself in to build your character. At the end of life, you’ll want to look back and know you did your best with what you were given. It’s really all about doing what’s right in the eyes of our Maker.

Some top tips …

What is politically correct today won’t be politically correct a year from now. Concern yourself with things that stand the test of time, invest in who you are, and invest in your character.

No matter your circumstances in life, strive to do right within the eyes of our Maker, that is all that really matters.

The only way to develop stronger character is by shifting your thought life to be full of the right thoughts and to rid it of the wrong thoughts. Act with integrity and seek fulfillment in things that honor our Creator.

Humility is greatly overlooked by many in society today. Despite what many may say, it’s not all about you and exalting yourself. It’s about serving those around you and building into others.

Your position in life is not always about you. We were put on this Earth to serve others, wherever that may be.

This episode at glance …

>>  (1:50-2:44) So much of reality is distorted now and detracts from what really matters in the scheme of things. I’ve had the chance to meet extraordinary people, travel the world, work in incredible professional jobs, but the one thing that truly matters is the character I have or haven’t lived in the situations I’ve found myself in.

>> (2:47-3:06) Within my experiences, I think back and consider, “Did I insert myself into the right conversations and stand up for what was right? Did I remove myself from situations I should not be a part of and hold my tongue when I shouldn’t speak?”

>> (3:07-3:39) What is right? What stands the test of time?  As trends, ideas, and perspectives shift throughout our lifetime, focus on the things that truly stand the test of time. There is only one truth, and applying it to your life changes everything.

>> (3:55-4:50) Former Secretary of the Treasury John Snow, who I worked with during my time at The White House, is a great example of someone who did what was right and built others up even when no one was watching. He was the embodiment of a good leader in the way that he acted and spoke to me and everyone he encountered there. He didn’t make it all about himself.

>>(5:04-5:41) Philippians 4:8 is a verse that really resonates with me. What we do and what we think sets the foundation for who we are as people. It’s easy to get into a negative spiral. If you’re wondering the types of thoughts you should have, this verse helps spell it out.

>> (5:48-6:19) David and Joseph in the Old Testament remind me that no matter your situation or circumstances, serve others first. It’s not all about you. Focusing on exalting yourself won’t lead to happiness and fulfillment. Focusing on building your character will end up building a better life.

You Are Not Your Brand

You are not your brand! I’m calling out a lie that’s everywhere in marketing and it’s holding business owners hostage in their mindset. I’m sharing my brand storyteller’s perspective of why you are not your brand. You might think that to authentically connect with your brand story, it means that you are your brand. I’m going to share how my clients and I have all struggled with this. I hope this mindset shift brings you more freedom and success in your business.
