35: Become a Better Interview Guest with Mike and Kim Barnes

Thought Leadership Series

Today’s special guests are Kim and Mike Barnes of Barnes Team Media. They bring a unique perspective as they both worked on the news for 30 years. Kim was an award-winning reporter and news anchor for 15 years, including more than a decade at KVUE in Austin. Mike was an award-winning sportscaster at KVUE for over 29 years. He was named Best Sportscaster in Austin for 17 years and Best in Texas four times.

Now they coach clients on camera impact in virtual communication, video and media interviews, and public speaking. They also recently launched a business named Parenting Aging Parents to support and guide others who are busy balancing careers, raising kids, and caring for aging parents.

In today’s interview they share powerful takeaways to help you immediately improve your interview skills. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, you can show up comfortably and composed in interviews. They share how confidence in speaking in front of others is a state of mind and a choice you make.

When it comes to preparation, Kim and Mike share that asking the host questions in advance is key to preparing to have a great interview. Focus on the key points you want to make and any stories you can share about them.

Something many interviewees don’t realize is that you’re in control of the conversation and you get to choose how to answer every question and that helps you steer the interview the way you want it to go.

Think mindfully about how your words are coming across and speak clearly on your speaking topic, so that the audience can easily understand and follow along. Avoid jargon.

Kim and Mike teach how to overcome nerves and fear with the reminder that you’re the expert on your business and your life’s stories. They share advice on how to get out of your head when you feel stuck, so that you can confidently, authentically connect with the audience and enjoy the process.

Tune into today’s episode to learn how to become a great interview guest with Mike and Kim Barnes.

33: Thought Leader series - Paid speaking with Taylorr Payne

Episode 33: Paid Speaking with Taylorr Payne

Thought Leadership Series

We have a special guest joining today’s episode. Taylorr Payne is the CEO and co-founder of SpeakerFlow, a software and coaching company that helps professional speakers grow their businesses by providing them with the coaching and systems they need to stay focused on booking more speaking gigs.

Taylorr shares with us two primary ways to grow thought leadership in the digital marketing world, content marketing and partnership marketing.

To display more credibility in your content marketing, create your own studies and statistics by reaching out to individuals and gathering your own information. This makes your content more reputable and more likely to be shared.

Partnership marketing introduces you to someone else’s audience as an expert they can trust in your area of expertise. Examples of this are guest speaking on podcasts, YouTube channels, as well as social media platforms. You can also write guest blogs, speak at conferences, host combined webinars, and more.

Keynote speeches are the big kahuna of the paid speaking world. Curious if your keynote deserves the big bucks? Learn Taylorr’s definition of what a keynote is to make sure you’re presenting what event planners and audiences expect.

32: Thought leader series: Podcast guest speaking

Today’s episode shares a strategy that grows your thought leadership by consistently speaking as an expert in front of other audiences as a podcast guest speaker.

This year I moved to an agency model to help clients get booked on podcasts as guest speakers because I found it’s an incredible way to grow your business. In this episode, I discuss why you should consider adding podcast guest speaking as a key component of your marketing strategy as well as tips on how to get started and show up as a thought leader.

Why do I recommend that you include podcast guest speaking as part of your marketing strategy?

It’s important to reach out to your existing audience to nurture those relationships but consistent growth happens when you get in front of new audiences on a regular basis.

Speaking as a guest expert on someone else’s podcast benefits you because that host has an established audience who trusts them. When he/she introduces you as an expert in your field, the audience will automatically associate you as an expert in your field without requiring you to sell yourself on why you are an expert. Your credibility is built in. What a relief!

As a platform, podcasting is unlike other digital marketing platforms because more than 80% of  people tune in for an entire episode, which often lasts for 30-60 minutes. This gives ample time to share who you are, your stories, what’s influenced you, and your recommendations. In a single episode, you can accomplish what would otherwise take nearly a dozen touchpoints. It’s an incredibly fast way to grow the know, like, and trust factor to build your authority and generate quality leads.

If this sounds like something you’d like to learn, tune into today’s episode to take a deeper look into how to grow your business and authority with podcast guest speaking.

A glance at today’s episode …

>{ 1:56 to 2:49 } Since podcast guest speaking is my agency’s signature offer, I’m today’s featured speaker and am sharing all of my top tips on the subject.

Find out why I shifted my business to emphasize podcast guest speaking and why I recommend you include it in your marketing strategy.

>{ 3:19 to 3:43 } Podcast guest speaking grows your business by introducing you to new audiences as an authority and expert in your field. When you turn this strategy into a system, you will experience consistent growth by continually speaking in front of more of your ideal audiences.

>{ 5:20 to 5:55 } Podcasting is a unique platform because 80% of audiences tune in for the entire episode. Most episodes last 30 to 60 minutes, giving you ample time to showcase your personality, expertise, wisdom, and recommendations. You can cultivate new relationships with a brand new audience in a single episode.

>{ 7:41 to 8:20 } How do I go about it? What do I recommend first? How do you maximize your efforts?

> { 13:50 to 14:17 } You’re booked, now what?  How do you prepare to be a great guest and show up as a thought leader? What should be the focal point of the interview? How do you monetize your efforts?

>{ 22:51 to 23:18 } Once your episode airs, that episode’s link will go to work for you for years to come. Learn several benefits of each episode and how to maximize your results.

30: The Role of Emotions in Business Decisions with Jessica Hottle

What role should emotions have in your business? Should you rely on your emotions or push them away? It’s important to pay attention to your emotions to see what needs to be addressed, not to make the decision for you. It’s your response to your feelings that can lead you to bad places.

Mindset is 99% of life. Honor your feelings without minimizing them. If you’re suffering, it’s ok to visit that place but don’t take up residence there.

Feelings can overwhelm you and try to control you, or if put in the proper place, you can use them as a warning system to identify a problem you need to address. Lean into the logic side of you as you investigate why you feel your emotions. Don’t rely on one or the other. Learn how to combine them to make the right decisions, asking God to lead you.
